Discover the fascinating highlights of Košice!

This year’s Women’s and Juniors Futnet European Championship is taking place in the east of Slovakia, in Košice.

Košice is the second largest city in Slovakia, after the capital Bratislava, with more than 240 000 inhabitants. The city is an important economic, industrial and cultural center of the eastern region. It has a well preserved historical center with Slovakia’s largest church: St. Elisabeth Cathedral, built between 1378 and 1508 in several stages. The long main street surrounded with aristocratic palaces, Catholic churches, townsfolk's houses, and many boutiques and cafés is the ideal place for a walk on any day of the year.

In 2008 Košice won the competition to hold the prestigious title of European Capital of Culture 2013 together with French city, Marseille. The awarded project, Interface, aims at the transformation of Košice from a centre of heavy industry to a postindustrial city with creative potential and new cultural infrastructure. “We support activity” is the main message of the project and the new vision for the city that should become a center of creativity and new future for young, active people.

Košice is also famous for many sport activities and events taking place in the city. The most famous is undoubtedly one of the oldest marathons in the world, the Košice Peace Marathon, founded in 1924 and ran every year on the first Sunday of October. Very popular for the local audience is ice hockey with the HC Košice ice hockey club that regularly plays in Slovakia´s highest league, the Extraliga and has already won six titles. In 2011, Košice, along with Bratislava, hosted the 2011 IIHF World Championships. Futnet also enjoys a high popularity. The futnet club DPMK Košice is a multiple national champion, and some longstanding members can also pride themselves with world champion titles.
